LocAle & Local Breweries ...
We regard the following as “LocAle” Breweries ...
Sulwath Brewery - www.sulwathbrewers.co.uk
The only major Brewery in Dumfries & Galloway. Sulwath Brewery is at Castle Douglas and turns out great award-winning brews. CAMRA has been very supportive of efforts to get local pubs to take ales from Sulwath.
Madcap Brewery - Annan
This small micro-brewery opened in Annan in 2009. It currently concentrates its output on small traditional bottle-conditioned ales.
Andrews Ales -
Andrews Ales is a new micro-Brewery (run by a CAMRA member). It opened in 2010 in the village of Cummertrees near Annan and is already looking to expand. Produces two or three regular brews, with other occasional seasonal ales.
Broughton Ales - www.broughtonales.co.uk
The Broughton Brewery lies just over the boundary into the Scottish Borders region. Broughton qualifies as ‘local’ for pubs in the eastern part of our area such as those in Moffat.
Strathaven Ales - www.strathavenales.co.uk
Heading north over our border with South Lanarkshire, the nearest brewery is at Strathaven. It lies a bit further than the recommended 30 miles ... but we can include the Strathaven Brewery in our list of LocAle suppliers for pubs in Nithsdale, north of Dumfries.
Geltsdale Ales - www.geltsdalebrewery.com
Geltsdale Brewery from just across the border at Brampton is on our list of LocAle Breweries and regularly supplies its great ales to pubs throughout the south-west of Scotland.
CAMRA LocAle is a new initiative that promotes pubs stocking locally brewed real ale. The scheme builds on a growing consumer demand for quality local produce and an increased awareness of ‘green’ issues. Everyone benefits from local pubs stocking locally-brewed real ale…
★ Pubs stocking local real ales can increase pub visits
★ Consumers enjoy greater beer choice and diversity
★ Local brewers who gain from increased sales
★ The local economy sees more money spent and retained locally
★ The environment will certainly benefit due to fewer ‘beer miles’ result in less road congestion and pollution
★ Tourism due to an increased sense of local identity and pride
Real Ale drinkers should celebrate what makes our region different. Local CAMRA Branches are strong supporters of the LocAle Campaign and are encouraging local Real Ale Pubs to stock ales from local Breweries.
The First Statistical Account of Scotland showed that in 1716 there were no less than ninety-one brewers (likely many of whom were brewsters, women brewers) in Dumfries alone. The Second Statistical Account of Scotland also noted that there were "several breweries in Dumfries" in 1845.
