Nithsdale and Cairndale
Nithsdale runs northwards up the valley of the river Nith from Dumfries to the border with Ayrshire. The main town is Dumfries, with the other sizeable towns being Thornhill, Sanquhar and Kirkconnel. The valley is rich in opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast, with numerous walking and cycling trails in local forests such as at Mabie and Ae.

Gold panning at Wanlockhead
The Nith is a quality salmon river and many visitors come each year to fish for salmon and sea trout.
We include the real ale pubs at Moniaive in the nearby Cairn Valley. This is a beautiful quiet corner of our area with much to offer the visitor. Moniaive holds regular music (folk and blues) events.
Unfortunately, there are no Cask Ale pubs in Sanquhar or
Kirkconnel, north of
Thornhill.
