Birdwatching
Dumfries & Galloway is perfect for bird watching. From extensive sandflats along the beautiful inner Solway coast to the craggy cliff faces in the west, the area is home to a huge array of bird species.
Cycling
Are you taking your cycling holidays in Dumfries and Galloway, where the bicycle was first invented? Cycling holidays are the ideal way to explore - with lots of off-road trails and miles and miles of quiet country roads.
Angling
Dumfries & Galloway’s rivers and lochs offer great sport for both game and coarse anglers. With 250 miles of coastline, there is plenty to offer for the dedicated sea angler.
Game Angling - The rivers which run into the Solway and the Irish Sea - the Border Esk, Annan, Nith, Urr, Dee, Fleet, Cree and Bladnoch - are famed for their sea trout and salmon runs.
Sea Angling - The long coastline of Dumfries & Galloway has attracted sea anglers for years, The Flat Rock at Balcary is a favourite place for catching large cod and the run of tope in Luce Bay is excellent. Dogfish, sea bass, conger, mackerel and pollack also provide good sport in the local waters.

Golfing
Dumfries & Galloway is surely a ‘golfer’s paradise’. With a choice of 30 courses – you can play serious golf or just a few rounds of holiday golf to your heart’s content. Courses at Portpatrick Powfoot, Southerness are of Championship standard, while others offer a serious challenge to the club golfer. Off the course, you’re sure to find a warm welcome in the clubhouses or the local pubs and restaurants. Most of the pubs listed in our Guide are within easy reach of a golf course.
Whatever your activity - or if you just want to lie back and take things easy ... you’ll never be too far from a good pub - serving cask-conditioned ale.

For cycling holidays on quiet country roads, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The National Cycle Network traverses the region taking in more than 130 miles of stunning scenery, rugged coastline and vast forests.
Off-road Cycling
If an off-road challenge for your cycling holidays appeals, then take time to visit 5 of the 7 stanes! Located at Ae, Mabie, Dalbeattie, Kirroughtree and Glentrool forests, these cycling centres are sure to make you come back for more.
Coarse angling - Many of the region’s lochs e.g. Loch Ken have a deserved reputation for good coarse fishing - with large specimen pike being the principal target.
